Orleans Has Successful Draft Day
June 7, 2008
Major League Baseball’s two-day First-Year Player Draft
concluded with the Orleans Cardinals being one of the most well
represented Cape Cod League franchises. There were 19 Cardinals
selected from their 2007 squad and three from this year’s team.
Headlining the draft among Cardinals was first round pick RHP
Ryan Perry (Arizona).
Perry was picked 21st overall by the Detroit Tigers after
having a successful campaign last summer and this year for the Arizona
Wildcats. Perry posted a 4.15 ERA in 21.2 innings for Orleans in 2007
and was selected to the league’s All-Star Game by MLB scouts.
Perry has a live fastball that has been clocked in triple digits before.
Another high pick was OF Dennis Raben (Miami) who was taken in the 2nd
round by the Seattle Mariners. Raben led the league last year
with 35 RBIs and won the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in Wareham.
He also hit a two-run home run for the Miami Hurricanes the day after
he was drafted in game one of a Super Regional against Arizona.
Two-time Cardinal RHP Clayton Shunick (NC State) had
a great day for himself after being a 5th round draft pick
of the Cincinnati Reds. Shunick’s NC State Wolfpack are just one
win away from going to the College World Series after splitting the
first two games of a Super Regional match-up with Georgia.
Three members of the 2008 Cardinals roster were
selected. SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) was taken in the 6th
round by the San Diego Padres. Also selected was 1B Nate
Freiman (Duke) who is a Wellesley,
Mass. native and making plans to
return to Orleans
for his second consecutive summer. He went to the Texas Rangers
in the 28th round. INF Matt Bowman (Nevada) was
taken in the 49th round by the Oakland Athletics.
In total, seven members of the 2007 Cardinals team were
selected on the first day of the draft. The Cardinals are just
one week away from opening up their 2008 campaign with a trip to
two-time defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis on Saturday, June 14th.
