Cardinals Send Four to Omaha
June 12, 2008
The Cape Cod League will not be the only event college baseball fans will have their eye on with the first pitch on Saturday. June 14th also marks the first day of action in the 2008 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Orleans will have four players on their 2008 roster participating in college baseball’s premier event. The Cardinals will welcome LHP Eric Erickson (Miami), LHP Rob Catapano (N. Carolina), LHP Justin Earls (Georgia), and 1B/3B Rich Poythress (Georgia) to the team when their collegiate seasons are completed.
Erickson has pitched himself to an impressive 8-1 record in 13 starts for the top ranked Hurricanes. The southpaw has posted a 4.32 ERA and walked just 16 batters in 73.0 innings pitched. He led Miami to the top national seed in the NCAA Tournament and will give the Cardinals pitching staff a huge boost when he arrives in Orleans.
North Carolina earned a national seed in the tournament this year in part because of the outstanding work by the versatile Catapano. The left-hander has appeared in 18 games for the Tar Heels and started seven of them. He has struck out 38 hitters in 37.2 innings pitched and recorded a 4-0 record with a 3.11 ERA. Last summer, Catapano went 3-1 and had a remarkable 0.92 ERA with the Cardinals. He appeared in 14 games and tossed 19.2 innings.
Poythress and Earls have both played well for the 8th seeded Georgia Bulldogs leading them to their sixth College World Series berth in school history. Poythress has had a ridiculous year at the plate hitting .370 while slamming 15 homeruns and driving in 67 runs. Earls will add some depth to the Orleans bullpen. In his sophomore year, Earls appeared in 25 games out of the pen and posted a 6.14 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 36.3 innings pitched.
Orleans has also added two more players to its squad. 1B Tony Plagman (Georgia Tech) and RHP Colin Warner (Wesley) will be on the opening day roster for the Cardinals. Plagman belted 16 homeruns during his sophomore season at Georgia Tech and hit .306 for the Yellow Jackets. Warner was a bullpen extraordinaire for the Wesley Wolverines posting a 1.97 ERA and a perfect 6-0 mark in 25 appearances. The sophomore threw 50.1 innings for the Division III school and struck out a whopping 71 hitters.
The Cardinals open play for the 2008 season on Saturday, June 14th at the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. First pitch will be at 5:00pm EDT and can be heard live on the Orleans Cardinals Radio Network.
