Five Cardinals, Three Starters Named to All-Star Team
July 19, 2008

Orleans,
Mass. – The
Cape Cod Baseball League has announced the rosters for next weekend’s 46th
annual CCBL All-Star Game and the Orleans Cardinals are well
represented. RHP Matt Thomson (San Diego),
RHP Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount), LHP Adam
Wilk (Long Beach St.),
3B Rich Poythress (Georgia) and OF Tim
Wheeler (Sacramento St.)
were all named to the Eastern Division team and Thomson will be the
starting pitcher for the East All-Stars. Wheeler and Poythress
were also named starters while OF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount)
will take place in the home run derby.
Thomson turned in his best performance of the year on Friday,
July 18th when he held the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox scoreless
through eight innings. He picked up the win against the league’s
top hitting team and improved his record to 3-0 on the season. He
has a team-leading ERA of 1.56 in a team-high 34.2 innings
pitched. Thomson has also struck out 24 this summer.
Both Viramontes and Wilk have a sub-2.00 ERA. Viramontes
is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in five appearances this season. He has
made four starts on the hill for Orleans.
Wilk leads the team with 13 appearances out of the bullpen and
has a solid 1.96 ERA. Wilk has sent down 23 hitters on strikes
while surrendering a base on balls to just two.
Orleans
is 12-1-1 since Poythress arrived for the summer and his hitting
statistics have backed up the Cardinals turnaround. The Georgia
infielder is hitting .364 in just 14 games (he does not have enough at
bats to qualify for the team or league lead) and has drawn 15
walks. He has an on-base percentage of .525, has scored eight
runs and driven in six.
Wheeler has also been a major catalyst in helping the
Cardinals obtain the league’s top record. He leads the team in
hitting (.288), runs scored (18) and walks (16). His 14 RBIs and
nine stolen bases are second on the squad. Wheeler has also had a
ten-game hitting streak that was snapped earlier in the season.
The Cards are 13-2-1 in games that he has batted in the leadoff
position.
Songco has wowed scouts and coaches alike with his raw
strength and power in batting practice and in games. His nine
extra-base hits lead the team and he has smacked three home runs this
season.
The five selections for the Cardinals are tied for the most
from a team in the Eastern Division. Hyannis and Bourne each had six
selections for the Western Division squad. The three starters for
the Cardinals are tied for the most from a team in the game.
Several teams also have three starters.
The All-Star teams are selected by each division’s respective
coaches. The festivities will take place on Saturday, July 26,
2008 at Veterans Field, home of the Chatham Athletics. The
Baseball Express Home Run Hitting Contest will take place at 5:00pm EDT
while the game itself will begin at 7:00pm.
