Orleans Losing Skid Continues

August 2, 2008

Orleans, Mass. The Orleans Cardinals have had four chances and dropped all four decisions.  Needing just one win to clinch a tie for a playoff berth, Orleans has picked the wrong time to go on a four-game losing streak.  They fell to Harwich tonight, 3-1.

This is the second four-game losing skid the Cardinals have suffered this season.  They bounced back from their last one with 11 wins in their next 15 games.

All three runs scored by Harwich were unearned due to four Orleans errors.  The Cardinals middle infield misplayed two groundballs that cost the Cards a pair of outs in the first.  A groundout by DH Brandon Belt (Texas) and a base-hit by OF Brian Kemp (St. John’s) scored two runs and gave Harwich an early 2-0 lead.

Cardinals OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) cut the deficit in half with one swing of the bat in the third.  He sent the ball onto the band shell beyond the right-centerfield fence for his fourth home run of the season.

Harwich bounced back in the following half inning after a fielding error was charged to LF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount).  Songco tried to bare-hand a base-hit off the bat of 3B Shaver Hansen (Baylor).  He overran the ball and it allowed OF Chase Leavitt (Arkansas) to score from second and make it a 3-1 game.

Both teams received excellent performances from their pitching staffs and neither team would score during the remainder of the contest.  Harwich relievers RHP Willie Kempf (Baylor) and RHP Steve Kalush (Santa Clara) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the ballgame and preserve the victory for the Mariners.

Wheeler and 1B Nate Freiman (Duke) were the only two Cardinals with extra-base hits.  Despite picking up the loss, Orleans starter RHP Brad Stillings (Kent State) did not allow an earned run and pitched six innings, striking out four.

The Cardinals also had an excellent pitching performance from LHP Isaac Morales (Cal State L.A).  The southpaw threw three shutout frames to finish the game and struck out two while allowing just two hits.

Orleans will look to snap the losing streak tomorrow afternoon with a matinee against the Bourne Braves.  The game will take place at Doran Park at 2:00pm EDT and will be broadcasted live on OrleansCardinals.com.  The Cardinals will send LHP Rob Rasmussen (UCLA) to the hill.  The lefty leads the team in wins with four on the season.
