Another Shutout, Another Six-Game Winning Streak
July 19, 2008

Orleans, Mass. The Orleans Cardinals have pitched shutouts on back-to-back nights for the second time this season. The shutouts have garnered wins No. 5 and 6 on a six-game winning streak that started just days after a previous six-game streak had ended. This time it was RHP Kyle Smith (Kent State) who pitched a phenomenal game.
Smith tossed eight shutout innings, using just 88 pitches to complete his effort. He allowed three hits and struck out four while picking up his third win of the year.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the first. OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) led off with a base hit and OF Alex Hassan (Duke) walked. Both would come in to score on a double from 3B Rich Poythress (Georgia), his fourth two-base hit of the season.
Orleans added a couple more runs to their lead with a two-out rally in the third. Hassan drew a base on balls and Poythress was hit by a pitch. 1B Nate Freiman (Duke) singled to left to load the bases for OF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount). Songco hit a RBI infield single. A throwing error made the score 4-0.
The Cards struck again in the fourth. C Travis Tartamella (Pepperdine) drew a walk and OF Gary Brown (Cal State Fullerton) reached on an error. A walk to Wheeler loaded the bases for SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) who delivered his team-leading 16th RBI. Wheeler scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals a six run lead.
That is when Orleans turned the game over to its pitching staff. Smith’s start was his second quality start in a row and lowered his ERA to 3.86 on the year. He was relieved by LHP Elliot Glynn (UCONN) in the ninth and Glynn pitched a scoreless frame to preserve the shutout. The Cardinals pitching staff has not allowed a run in 24 consecutive innings. They also pitched back-to-back shutouts on June 26th and 27th.
The Cape Cod Baseball League announced the rosters for next weekend’s All-Star Game and five Cardinals will represent the Eastern Division. RHP Matt Thomson (San Diego) will be the starting pitcher for the squad and is joined by Poythress and Wheeler in the starting lineup. RHP Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) and LHP Adam Wilk (Long Beach St.) also made the team. Songco will participate in the league’s home run derby.
The win marks the second time in the last two weeks that the Cardinals have gone on a six-game winning streak. They also won six in a row from July 3rd to July 9th. Orleans is 15-2-1 in their last 18 games and holds a seven point lead over second place Harwich. Tomorrow night they will head to Chatham to face the Athletics for the third time this season. The Cardinals have won both decisions between the two clubs. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm EDT.
