Orleans Surrenders Late Lead, Ties Brewster

Orleans, Mass.
– In its longest game of the summer, the Orleans Firebirds settled
for an eleven-inning 3-3 tie with the Brewster Whitecaps Wednesday at
Brewster. Orleans had a 3-1 lead and held its opponent scoreless
for six straight innings before Brewster plated two runs in the eighth
inning to tie the game.
After Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia) singled and Lyle
Allen (Georgia) walked to start the bottom of the eighth for
Brewster, Tim Ferguson (Ole Miss) hit a double down the left
field line off of Matt Packer (Virginia) to plate both runners
and tie the game for good.
Casey Gaynor (Rutgers) started the game for Orleans, and hit
his spots flawlessly as he has done all summer. Gaynor pitched
six innings, and scattered four hits while walking one and striking out
six. Brewster managed one unearned run in the first inning, when Ferguson
(3
RBI) doubled home Gyorko after the inning had been prolonged by a
dropped popup.
After trailing 1-0 for the first four innings, Hampton Tignor (Florida) led off the fifth
inning with a single and was sacrificed over to second to bring up Gary
Brown (CS Fullerton). Brown looped a fly ball down the right
field line that landed for a hit and caused trouble for the Brewster
right fielder; before the ball had come in from the right field corner,
Brown crossed home plate for what appeared to be an inside the park
home run.
After an argument from Brewster field manager Tom Myers and a
conference by the umpires, Brown was moved back to third base with a
triple because of fan interference, only to summon arguments from the
Firebirds dugout and manager Kelly Nicholson. Danny Muno (Fresno St.)
finally stepped up to the plate for Orleans, and singled through the
right side to bring home Brown and end the discussion, putting the
Firebirds on top 2-1.
In his next at bat, Brown left nothing to be argued, smacking
a home-run over the left field fence to lead off the seventh
inning. It was his second home run of the year and his second in
three games.
Steven Maxwell (TCU) made the start for Brewster, and
pitched six innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while
striking out four and walking none. Danny Sandbrink
(Stanford) came in to relieve Maxwell in the seventh, and Brown
was the first batter he faced and the only run he allowed.
Alex Hassan (Duke) moved from the DH spot to pitch 2.1
scoreless innings for Orleans,
starting in the ninth. Hassan walked two Brewster batters in the
11th to put runners on first and second with one out, but Brett
Weibley (Kent St.)
came in and retired the final two batters of the game to preserve the
tie.
Orleans
is now 15-10-1, and will travel to Cotuit for a make-up game at 5:00 pm
Thursday afternoon. Brewster moves to 10-11-4, and hosts YD on
Thursday at 5:00 pm.
