Hyannis Ends Cardinals Winning Streak

July 10, 2008

Orleans, Mass. All good things must come to an end and for the Cardinals, their six game winning streak snapped tonight with a 1-0 loss to HyannisLHP Eric Erickson (Miami) went seven strong innings and did not allow a run but the Orleans bats were silenced by two Mets pitchers.

Erickson threw 86 pitches without walking a hitter in his outing.  He allowed four hits and struck out six in his most impressive performance of the summer.  Erickson left a scoreless ballgame after seven and handed the ball over to LHP Adam Wilk (Long Beach St.).

"I felt great. I was in the lower part of the zone and all of my pitches were working. We played great as a team defensively.  There were a handful of double plays. We struggled with the bats a little bit but I thought it was a great game overall," Erickson said.

Orleans received another good outing from Wilk.  He threw 15 of his 18 pitches for strikes and allowed just two hits while striking out two in two innings of work.  Unfortunately for Wilk, the two hits allowed were both flares that came from consecutive hitters and led to the Mets’ only run of the game.

The Cardinals were shutout and held to just two hits thanks to some solid pitching from Hyannis starter RHP Graham Stoneburner (Clemson) and RHP Matt Ridings (Western Kentucky)

Stoneburner began the game and surrendered the only two hits of the game, a single by 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada) and a double by OF Alex Hassan (Duke).  Stoneburner also struck out five while walking three.

The Mets made a call to the bullpen after the fifth and brought in Ridings who was nearly perfect.  He tossed four innings and did not allow a hit.  The right-hander walked one and sent two Cardinals down on strikes.

With just one run and eight hits in the contest, the game moved along and finished in a timely two hours and 14 minutes.  It was the fastest game that Orleans had played in this season.

The loss not only snapped the Cardinals’ win streak but also a nifty hitting streak put together by OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.).  He was held hitless for the first time in 10 games.  The streak was the third longest recorded by any player in the league this season.  Wheeler did reach base via a walk, however, and has now been on-base safely in all 11 Orleans home games.

The Cardinals remain in first place with the loss Brewster suffered tonight.  Orleans will play a divisional foe tomorrow evening when Harwich comes to town.  The Mariners are in third place in the East and trail the Cardinals by two games in the standings.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
