Cardinals Make it Five in a Row

July 8, 2008

Orleans, Mass. After hitting just three home runs in 18 games, something has started to click for the Cardinals in the power department.  Orleans jacked three home runs yesterday at Yarmouth-Dennis and hit another three tonight against the Red Sox in an 8-2 victory.

The Cardinals picked up home runs in the first inning from OF Matt Bowman (Nevada) and OF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount) to jump out to a 4-0 lead before Yarmouth-Dennis could record an out.  SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) added a solo bomb in the third to make it a five run game.  A wind gusting up to 25mph and blowing in made the feats even more impressive.

That was enough run support for Cardinals starter RHP Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) who cruised to his first win of the season.  Viramontes tossed five frames and allowed just four hits and one run.  He maintained his season ERA at 1.80.

Orleans had five runs on three hits, all of them long balls, until the eighth when the Cardinals added three more hits.  One of those hits came off the bat of OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) who has now hit safely in nine straight games.  It is the second longest current streak in the league.

The Cardinals have not lost a game this season in which they led or were tied after the fifth inning.  The impressive stat is a testament to the team’s solid bullpen which was solid again tonight.  LHP Quinn Haselhorst (Dayton), RHP Brad Gemberling (Princeton) and RHP Brad Stillings (Kent State) combined to pitch four innings and allow just one run.

Songco has continued his hot hitting and now has hit home runs in back-to-back games.  His blast tonight was his third of the season and his two hits brings his batting average up to .286 on the season.

“I struggled for a few games but I’m seeing the ball well now.  We’re just starting to hit the ball.  We’ve been working hard before games and now the ball is just going out of the park,” Songco said.

The trend of winning continues for a Cardinals team that has now taken seven of their last eight and nine of their last 12.  Orleans is just one point behind Brewster for the division lead and will face the Whitecaps tomorrow afternoon.  The winner will be in sole possession of first place almost halfway through the season.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm at Stony Brook Field in Brewster and can be heard live on OrleansCardinals.com.
