Mistake Free Game Earns Orleans Win

Orleans, Mass. – The Cardinals played a near flawless game as they made contact, didn’t commit an error and limited the walks issued en route to a 4-2 victory over Wareham. RHP Kyle Kamppi (Georgia Southern) picked up his fifth save of the season while LHP Rob Rasmussen (UCLA) earned his second win.

Wareham jumped out to a quick lead with three singles in the first inning. Rasmussen limited the damage, however, and allowed just one run.

The Gatemen would add to the lead with another in the fourth but this time the Cardinals responded. With the bases loaded and one away, SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) came up in a situation that has not been friendly to Orleans this season. With just one hit in nine chances as a team with the bases juiced, Figueroa proved that numbers didn’t matter tonight.

He smacked a 1-2 pitch to opposite field and into left center for a two-run double. It tied the ballgame and brought C Travis Tartamella (Pepperdine) up with a RBI opportunity. He grounded out but advanced the runners to give Orleans a 3-2 lead.

Orleans would add another run in the sixth after OF Alex Hassan (Duke) scored on a wild pitch to make it a two run game.

Hassan finished the game going 2-for-3 and scored two runs. The Cardinals also received a solid game at the plate from 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada) and OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) who picked up hits to extend their hitting streaks to three and five games respectively.

The Cards pitching staff threw brilliantly tonight. LHP Adam Wilk (Long Beach St.), Rasmussen and Kamppi combined to allow Wareham just six hits and two runs. They struck out 10 Gatemen hitters. Rasmussen tossed six innings and was relieved by Wilk, who threw two, and Kamppi who finished the game in the ninth.

The annual Fourth of July game with Chatham will take place tomorrow night in Orleans. The Cardinals will return the trip to Chatham on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:00pm EDT and the Cardinals Clubhouse show will air at 6:40pm on OrleansCardinals.com.
