Rough Night for Cardinals in Harwich
July 2, 2008

Harwich, Mass. – The Cardinals came into Harwich at
the wrong time as the Mariners racked up 12 hits and 11 runs against a
tired Orleans
pitching staff. Harwich dropped the Cards to 7-8 on the season
with the 11-3 win.
After RHP Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) was
scratched from a start due to a minor injury and the Cardinals had
three pitchers down from overuse, the pitching staff had very few
options. RHP Brad Gemberling (Princeton)
received the spot start and the Cardinals went to DH Alex Hassan
(Duke) later in the game for an inning.
Gemberling struggled early on as he gave up four runs in the
second inning. He settled down and went on to pitch five complete
frames but left the game trailing 6-0. He was replaced by LHP
Quinn Haselhorst (Dayton) who was
hit hard by the Mariners and 1B Joe Sanders (Auburn). Sanders blasted a
three run bomb in the sixth to extend Harwich’s lead to nine. The
Mariners went on to score two more to make the score 11-0. All
five of Harwich’s sixth inning runs came with two outs.
Harwich RHP Billy Bullock (Florida) was locked in this
evening and shut the Cardinals down for seven innings. Orleans managed
just one hit until the eighth before they finally started to jump on
Bullock. Hassan reached on a walk and C Hampton
Tignor (Florida)
singled to put two on for OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.).
Wheeler came through with a base knock to drive in Hassan and put the
Cardinals on the board.
Orleans
would pick up two more runs in the ninth and combined for six hits in
the final two innings of play. It was too little too late,
however, as the Mariners won the game 11-3.
The Cardinals threw Hassan in the bottom of the eighth for the
first time this summer. He is usually a starting outfielder for Orleans but
recorded five saves as a closer this past spring at Duke. He had
an opportunity to showcase his talents on the bump tonight and did just
that, pitching a scoreless inning without allowing a hit.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall below .500 at 7-8
overall. They have now played seven games in as many days and
will play 18 days straight before their next scheduled off day on July
14th. Tomorrow they will host the Wareham Gatemen whom
defeated Orleans 2-0 in New Bedford
earlier this season. The game will be carried live on
OrleansCardinals.com with the Cardinals Clubhouse pre-game show
beginning at 6:40pm EDT.
