Orleans Scratches Out Seven Runs in Win
July 1, 2008

Orleans,
Mass. – For
13 games this season it seemed like the opponent would capitalize on
every mistake the Cardinals made. Finally, the tables
turned for Orleans
and they took a 7-3 win from a sloppy performance by Brewster.
The Whitecaps walked 11 Cardinals, hit two more, left ten
runners on base and threw six wild pitches. Orleans put runners in scoring
position and as a result, capitalized on the miscues. The
Cardinals plated three runs off of wild pitches and scored a fourth on
an errant throw from the Brewster infield.
A big reason for the Cardinals success at the plate was due to
the quality at bats they received from the top of their
lineup. The Cardinals' No. 2 and 3 hitters were retired just once
on a combined 10 plate appearances. 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada)
reached base in all four trips, scored twice and drove in
two. He was replaced in the seventh by SS Cole Figueroa (Florida)
who singled in his only at bat and came around to score. No. 3
hitter 1B Nate Freiman (Duke) also had a great night at the
plate going 2-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a RBI.
Orleans
jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first after Brewster RHP
Mark Lamm (Vanderbilt) really struggled on the mound. Lamm
lasted two innings, walked six, surrendered two hits and allowed three
runs, two of them earned. He picked up his first loss of the
summer.
The Cardinals never really did put the game out of reach,
however, and Brewster had an excellent opportunity to change the
outcome in the seventh. With one out and trailing by
four, the Whitecaps hit three consecutive singles to cut the lead down
to three and start a rally. LHP Elliot Glynn (Connecticut)
walked the next hitter to load the bases and Manager Kelly Nicholson
made a call to the bullpen.
He brought on LHP Quinn Haselhorst (Dayton). With the tying run
on the bases and still one out, Haselhorst struck out 3B Connor
Powers (Mississippi St.)
and induced an inning ending groundout off the bat of SS Derek
Poppert (San Francisco).
The loss for Brewster was their first since they fell to Chatham on June
21st covering a span of 10 days. They went 5-0-2
during that stretch and still
remain in first in the Eastern Division.
The game was the final one in a Cardinals uniform for DH Tony Plagman (Georgia Tech).
He will be moving on to play for the Lowell All-Americans
in the New
England Collegiate Baseball League. Orleans expects the final two of their contracted
players
to arrive this week when 3B Rich
Poythress (Georgia) and
LHP Justin Earls (Georgia)
report.
Orleans
has now won two games in a row and is at .500. The win propels
them to third place with another key division tilt tomorrow
night at Harwich. The game will take place at 7:00pm EDT and
carried live on OrleansCardinals.com.
