Figueroa's Hit Lifts Cardinals to 2-1 Victory
June 17, 2008

Orleans, Mass. There haven’t been many times in SS Cole Figueroa (Florida)’s baseball career that he has gone hitless in 11 straight at bats. A career .340 hitter at Florida, it isn’t often that Figueroa has to worry about breaking out of a slump. But he did just that with a two out opposite field base hit in the seventh to bring in LF Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount) and break a 1-1 tie.
That run would turn into the winning one after RHP Matt Thomson (San Diego) worked a 1-2-3 eighth and RHP Kyle Kamppi (Georgia Southern) closed the door on the Commodores for his second save of the season.
Falmouth took an early 1-0 lead when they scratched out a run in the first without recording a hit. Leadoff man OF A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch and took second on a groundout. A wild pitch advanced him to third and a groundball off the bat of C Trevor Coleman (Missouri) brought him in.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, the Cardinals showcased some small ball skills themselves after OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) led off the bottom of the second with a walk. Wheeler swiped second on the next pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. With one out, DH Shaun Kort (Nevada) sent a fly ball deep to left. Falmouth OF Jimmy Cesario (Houston) made a nice running grab but it was deep enough to score Wheeler from third and tie the game.
The pitcher’s duel went back and forth for several innings. Both teams had a runner reach third once; but, for the most part, their offenses were held in check.
That was until the seventh inning when Songco led things off with a his second hit of the game. A crucial sacrifice bunt was laid down by C Hampton Tignor (Florida) to put Songco in scoring position for the first out. After a groundout from 3B Mike Murphy (Maryland) and a walk issued to 2B Gary Brown (CS Fullerton), Figueroa came up with two on and two out and a chance to give the Cardinals the lead.
He slapped a 2-1 pitch into left field. Songco rounded third and headed home as the throw went to third. It was in time to retire Brown who attempted to take an extra base but after the run had already scored to give the Cardinals the lead.
Songco’s multi-hit game would not be outdone by Wheeler who had two more hits himself. The outfielder from California also stole two bases, drew a walk and scored the first run of the game. Songco and Wheeler lead the team in batting average.
The Cardinals also had solid pitching performances from RHP Kyle Smith (Kent State) and LHP Adam Wilk (Long Beach St.). Wilk earned his first Cape Cod League victory with three shutout innings and did not surrender a hit. Smith started the game for Orleans and tossed four innings scattering three hits and allowing one earned run.
The Cardinals will continue their home-stand tomorrow night against the Harwich Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm and the game will be carried live on OrleansCardinals.com. Tune in for the Cardinal Clubhouse pre-game show 20 minutes prior to the first pitch!
