Orleans Battles Weather and Wareham Pitching Staff in 2-0 Loss
June 16, 2008

New Bedford, Mass. – It was a chilly night for baseball
as the Orleans Cardinals and Wareham Gatemen met in New Bedford for
each team’s second regular season game. With temperatures in the
upper 50’s, a light mist falling and a damp feel in the air, the
weather was not exactly ideal for baseball. It didn’t seem to
faze the Wareham Gatemen however as they defeated Orleans by a score of 2-0.
It didn’t take long for the Gatemen to put themselves on the
board as they capitalized on some Cardinals mistakes. 2B Ryan
Pineda (CS Northridge) drew a walk with one out and advanced to
second on an error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and came
in to score on a RBI groundout by 1B Aaron Baker (Oklahoma).
With a one run lead despite not recording a hit through the
first three innings, Gatemen RHP Max Perlman (Harvard) went to
work. He held the Cardinals scoreless through seven and completed
a tremendous effort by allowing just three hits and no runs in seven
innings pitched.
Perlman was granted some run support by a scrappy Gatemen
offense that pieced together a couple more hits to score in the
fifth. OF Brett Eibner (Arkansas) led off with a base
hit up the middle and then stole second. He moved over to third
on a groundout by Baker and came home to score on a single by OF
Steve Liddle (Vanderbilt).
The Gatemen had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead
in the sixth but LHP Elliot Glynn (UCONN) pitched well after
putting himself in a jam. After allowing the first two hitters to
reach base and a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position,
Glynn sent down Liddle and DH Tom Stack-Babich (Harvard) to
keep the score at 2-0.
With just a few scattered hits and not much of a scoring
threat through seven innings, the Cardinals had a rally brewing in the
eighth with Perlman out of the game. Shaun Kort (Nevada) drew a leadoff walk and advanced to
second on a single by 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada). With one out, 1B
Nate Freiman (Duke) hit a line drive to the shortstop. SS
Jake Lemmerman (Duke) made a nice grab but threw the ball away
trying to double off Bowman at first. It advanced both runners
into scoring position with cleanup hitter RF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.)
at the plate with a chance to tie the game on a base
hit. After a pitching change to bring in Wareham
RHP Josh Slaats (Hawaii),
Wheeler walked to load the bases for CF Alex Hassan (Duke).
Hassan was inches away from tying the game with a hard groundball down
the first baseline but the ball went just foul. The next pitch
from Slaats froze Hassan for a called strike three and ended the inning.
Wareham
closer RHP Mike Seander (Duke) entered the game in the ninth
and did not allow a hit while closing the game out and preserve the
shutout for the Gatemen. It was his first save of the season.
“It was a pretty typical early Cape League
game,” Cardinals Manager Kelly Nicholson said. “It was
pretty well pitched on both sides and they just capitalized on a couple
of mistakes that we made and they led to runs,” he added.
Another solid pitching performance, particularly from the
Cardinals bullpen, kept the team in the game. Glynn pitched two
shutout innings and RHP Colin Warner (Wesley) tossed a
scoreless ninth. The Orleans
bullpen has now thrown seven innings and allowed just one run during
the first two games of the season.
“I thought our guys threw the ball well tonight especially our
guys in the bullpen Elliot [Glynn] and Colin [Warner],” Nicholson said.
The game was played in New Bedford
at Paul Walsh Field on the campus of New Bedford High
School. The Cape Cod Baseball League
will have a few games played at various sites in the state of Massachusetts
in an effort to broaden its fan base. Other locations for games
include Brockton and Nantucket.
The Cardinals will open their home schedule tomorrow night
with a game against the Falmouth Commodores. First pitch is
scheduled for 7:00pm and the game will be carried live on
OrleansCardinals.com. Tune in for the Cardinal Clubhouse pre-game
show 20 minutes prior to the first pitch!
