Season Starts on the Right Foot for Orleans
June 14, 2008
South Yarmouth, Mass. - T here was small ball, long ball, speed and solid defense on the part of the Cardinals and it translated into a 5-2 win at Yarmouth-Dennis, something the Cards failed to accomplish in 2007.
After a slow offensive start for both teams, the game took off in the fourth. Orleans took the first lead after stringing together a couple of hits. 1B Nate Freiman (Duke) singled up the middle with one away. He advanced to second after a base knock from his collegiate teammate OF Alex Hassan (Duke). DH Shaun Kort (Nevada) followed with a hit to drive in Freiman and put the Cards on top 1-0.
Not long after, the Red Sox tied things up. In the bottom half of the fourth 2B Greg Miclat (Virginia) singled and advanced to second a throwing error. A couple of batters later, Miclat came around to score on a RBI single by 3B Nick Liles (Western Carolina).
The Cardinals took the run right back. OF Gary Brown (CS Fullerton) reached first on an infield single with one out. A few pitches later, Brown stole second. It didn't take long for Brown to swipe third too and a walk by SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) placed runners on the corners for 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada). Bowman came through with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and give Orleans the 2-1 lead. Freiman backed the bunt up with a base hit through the left side that brought in Figueroa as the Cardinals extended the lead to two.
In the sixth, Orleans used a little bit of long ball to pick up an insurance run when OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento State) hit a solo blast to left-center for the first Cardinals long ball of the season.
Yarmouth-Dennis would plate a run in the seventh on a double play ball and cut the Cardinals lead to two but an error by Miclat in the top of the eighth led to another Orleans run and RHP Kyle Kamppi (Georgia Southern) closed the door on the Red Sox in the ninth.
Orleans picks up its first win of the season in part to an excellent pitching performance by LHP Isaac Morales (Cal State L.A.) who was making his Cape Cod Baseball League debut. Morales allowed five hits and just one unearned run while not striking out a batter. After not pitching in a game setting in over a month, Morales was held to a pitch count and labored through five innings with just 73 pitches and 45 strikes.
"I was pretty nervous in the beginning. The Cape Cod League is the best league out there. I haven't thrown many bullpens in the last month so I just tried to spot up my fastball. I like to throw my changeup a lot but I only threw it three or four times in this game so I guess that is pretty good," Morales said.
Freiman and Wheeler had multi-hit games in the season opener while every Cardinals starter reached base safely.
Orleans also capitalized on several nice defensive plays. The Cards threw out two runners from the outfield after Hassan nailed a Red Sox runner at second and Brown began a 7-6-3 putout after making a running catch on a fly ball for the double play. Morales picked off a runner at first in the second and C Hampton Tignor (Florida) threw out OF DeAngelo Mack (South Carolina) trying to steal second.
The win was the first at Yarmouth-Dennis since July 21, 2006. Orleans was just 1-5 in their six games against the two-time defending champion Red Sox last year.
Cotuit will visit Orleans tomorrow in the Cardinals' home opener. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm EDT and will pit Orleans RHP Brad Gemberling (Princeton, 0-0) against Cotuit RHP Brandon Cumpton (Georgia Tech, 0-0). Click OrleansCardinals.com for coverage and a live broadcast.
